The University of Western Australia, established by an Act of Parliament in 1911, was the first free university in the British Commonwealth of Nations. In 1913 UWA was established in Irwin Street in corrugated iron and weatherboard buildings known as ‘Tin Pot Alley’ . The university moved in stages to its present location on Matilda Bay in Crawley.
